UST celebrates National Teachers Month with a world record attempt
October has started and it is time for us to gather and honor our teachers as they gave us the knowledge and spirit that we have today. However, the University of Santo Tomas didn’t only do just that, but made the grandest tribute ever by vying to break a Guinness World Record last September 29.

Over 17,000 Thomasians from different colleges, all wearing black shirts, graced the university’s field as they queued to become part of the attempted largest human formation in the world. Although the student population of the university is around 43,000, it was a good thing that 17,011 students, teaching and non-teaching staff and officials, participated in the event.
Four entrance gates were made, with one on each side of the field. Students went through a single-file line, tapping in their IDs as part of the count-off for the world record. In groups, they were assisted by students from the College of Education to their assigned letters as they try to brave the scorching heat of the sun.
There were auditors, accountants and teachers who served as witnesses as they took photos and videos, and other evidence for Guinness to see. It was almost the whole Thomasian community who united to break the world record and send out one of the loveliest messages for their dear teachers for National Teachers Month.
“My Teacher Is My Hero!” could be read from the highest building in the campus and it looked marvelous. Not only that, but the students also screamed “My Teacher is My Hero!” as the timer ticked for UST to break another world record.
But what’s better than Thomasians attempting to break a world record for their teachers? Well, it’s setting a new one!
As of last month, Guinness World Records recognized the Rotary International District 3000, Rotary Club of Perambalur New Gen, and Roever Group of Educational Institution as the holder of the record for largest human sentence, with 16,550 participants who spelled out "You can, you will" in celebration of International Youth Day in Perambalur, India.
Also in line with National Teachers Month, The Department of Education (DepEd) will lead this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration on October 5 with the theme, “My Teacher, My Hero” at the Philippine Sports Arena in Pasig City where thousands of Filipino teachers are expected to attend to show their participation in the worldwide celebration.
